The Welsh Government started in 2004 with free breakfast to
be sure that also the poorest children started the day with a health breakfast.
Now a row has broken out about the financial funding. The conservatives said
that it would be better to spend the money on education rather than on food,
which is a responsibility for the parents. Education minister Leighton Andrews
said that if children started the day with a healthy breakfast the
concentration and results of the learning process are much better. A coalition
deal commits us to get on with free breakfast and he wants more schools in
Wales to sign in for free breakfasts.
It is important for children to have a healthy breakfast
because it helps them to concentrate. In the first place it is the responsibility
of the parents to feed their children proper but if the parents have financial
problems or have other problems it is the duty of the government to help them.
I am in favor of that. Breakfast is an important meal of the day and also the
poorest children need a good start. The conservatives wants to spend more money
on education but that won’t help if the children can’t concentrate or are
hungry during the day.
I think it is a very good idea to supply a healthy breakfast. Besides that it will help the children with their concentation, you will have the guarantee that the chidren have eaten and that the money is well spent. Nowadays many children often don't have breakfast because their parents have already gone to work.
