Brendan Rodgers is the new manager of Liverpool football club. He has signed a three years contract and is going to start within 24 hours. Brendan Rodgers is now 39 years old and this position is a big step forward in his career. He used to be a football player but after a knee injury he stopped playing football. Rodgers is married and has two children. Jose Mourinho said that he is a very ambitious man and does not see football different from himself. Mourinho also said that he is open and communicative and likes to learn. Brendan was raised in Carnlough and as he coach he travelled around Europe. He speaks Spanish and Italian.

Liverpool is a famous football team in England. This man is only 39 years old and now he is the trainer of one of the biggest football clubs in Northern Ireland.  For a manager it is important to be open and communicative. It is your task to train a group of man and bring them to the top. I think it is a hard job. If the football club doesn’t perform well the trainer is the one who gets the critics. Jose Mourinho, who is a very famous manager, gives Brendan a lot of credit. Hopefully for Brendam his career is going to be as successful as Morinho’s career.

Paralyzed man

The article is about a called Tony Nicklinson. His age is 57 and seven years ago. paralyzed after a stroke. The only way to communicate is by blinking or through limited head movement. He doesn’t want to live anymore because as he said his life is dull, miserable and intolerable. Death is his only way out. His wife said that he was always the live and soul of the party .She said she has thought about ending his life herself but that was out of the question because that could take her to prison. The law is very clear about that in England. It is not allowed. Tony Niclison is now going to court to fight his right to die. 

This is a very difficult situation. I can imagine that the life of Tony is horrible but  If we make a law about assisted suicide who is deciding that a life is not worth living. I think it’s very dangerous for the weakest among us like the sick, the old the disabled ones or the homeless. These are the people who are most in danger of having their lives judged as being ‘not worth living’. On the other hand, Tony is an intelligent man and he can make his own choice. If your life is so awfully who am I to say that he has to go on with his life?

Cable car in London

London is working on the first cable car across the River-Thames in East- London. It is unsure if it will be finished before the Olympics. There are 36 gondolas and in five minutes you are on the other side of the river. The cable car is a very expansive one. The bill could be 62,5 pounds. 36 pounds comes from sponsorship another eight from European regeneration money. The rest will probably come from taxpayer’s money. The plan is to be open in the summer of 2012. The cable car is probably going to be a tourist attraction and a fast way to cross the river.

When I read this article I immediately thought: This is the solution for traffic congestion. Why not built more cable cars and get around true the air? The problem is that cable cars are very expansive. When you coming from outside London it must be spectacular to take the cable car across the river. The views are stunning, I think.  Perhaps we can build a cable in the Netherlands as well. The problem is that it is very expansive to build a cable car and because we are in the middle of a financial crisis, it won’t be possible now.

Free breakfast for schoolchildren

The Welsh Government started in 2004 with free breakfast to be sure that also the poorest children started the day with a health breakfast. Now a row has broken out about the financial funding. The conservatives said that it would be better to spend the money on education rather than on food, which is a responsibility for the parents. Education minister Leighton Andrews said that if children started the day with a healthy breakfast the concentration and results of the learning process are much better. A coalition deal commits us to get on with free breakfast and he wants more schools in Wales to sign in for free breakfasts.

It is important for children to have a healthy breakfast because it helps them to concentrate. In the first place it is the responsibility of the parents to feed their children proper but if the parents have financial problems or have other problems it is the duty of the government to help them. I am in favor of that. Breakfast is an important meal of the day and also the poorest children need a good start. The conservatives wants to spend more money on education but that won’t help if the children can’t concentrate or are hungry during the day.

dog restrictions

In a school in Nottingham parents are asked not to take their dog with them while picking up their children. The doc owning parents have complained. The Middleton Primary School asked the parents because children felt intimidated by the dogs. One staff member has been bitten. The parents have accused the school for being unreasonable and some of them are going to ignore the request. They found it unreasonable and they say that the school hasn’t the right to tell them where to walk their dogs. The school said they made this  “polite request “ only for the health and safety of the children.

If the children are afraid of the dogs and a staff member is bitten by one of the dogs  I think the request isn’t unreasonable. For dog owners it is always difficult to accept that a dog is not a human being. They see their pets as members of the family and they can’t imagine that it is possible to be frightened for their dog. It is also an option to tied up the dogs and so minimize the risk that a child would be bitten. Personally I think it is better to leave the dogs at home for a moment.

Cash machines this summer in UK

If you go to the UK this summer and you need some cash and you want to give some charity go to a cash machine. This summer it is possible if you use a credit card or debit card you can give small amounts of charity between one pound and 250 pounds. The banks are able to choose whom they support and the people can choose to whom they want to give some money. Royal Bank of Scotland and independent Bank Machine will be the first but soon others will follow. This all is an initiative from the Government. They found it important to find new ways to support charitable and voluntary action. The Bank Machine has already received more than 500 registrations of charities.

I think this is a good initiative from the government. Now people are able to give directly a small amount to a voluntary organization of their choice.  Personally, I found it difficult to give to a voluntary organization because it is difficult to now what they exactly doing with your money. It is the same with a disaster fund. Of course you want to help the people in a country where just a big disaster has taken place, but you never now if the money is spent well and go directly to the people who need it.

UK trial forportable brain cooling device

In the UK a trail has started with a portable brain-cooling device. In the hospitals a larger brain-cooling device are already in use but in the ambulances. The London air ambulance is the first one who is going to use a portable Rhinochill machine. Usually it starts after you get to hospital but now they can start immediately in the ambulance. . The chances of surviving are increased as well as your chances to survive without brain damage. So far, it is been used five times and it works by delivering a cold current of air up the nostrils via tubes, cooling the brain and body.

First of all I want to say that it is still a trial. Only five patients are being treated with it so you cannot say anything about the results yet. Anyway medical innovation is important and if it saves lives so you can’t be against it. My own opinion about this is that I think sometimes doctors are doing too much to keep patients alive. Sometimes the chances are low to survive but they keep on going to reanimate you. For example, our Prince Friso : he is still alive but in coma. Even if he awakes what chances does he has to live a human life?

Does England need standpipes?

England has already had two dry winters. If England gets another dry winter, standpipes could be needed in the streets next year. People’s water supply would be cut off and they have to go with a basket to the standpipes to get water.  In 1976 there was also a water problem. The people from England where cut off from water and had to use the standpipes to get water.

Caroline Spelman, the environment secretary said that the UK has to search for other solution to supply water.  Trevor Bishop, head of water resources has two options. The first one is to desalinization, removing the salt from seawater to produce fresh water but that is very expensive and bad for the environment. The second option is to move water around the country to the drought places.

 

We are used to take water when we need it, so it must be difficult to chance the habits of water use.  I can’t imagine that I have to go to a water pipe to get my water. Anyway, in many parts of the world it’s quit common. The first option isn’t a good one, it’s bad for the environment and it cost a lot of money. The second one is better. Just move the water around to the dry places. The best option is, I think to try to change the habits of the use of water.  Take a shower not longer than 4 or 5 minutes a day could be useful or don’t spoil water with watering the garden. What England really needs of course is a wet winter.

Madeleine McCann

Madeleine McCann has been missing now for five years. When she was three years old her parents left her in their Portuguese apartment. When they went to check on her she was gone.  The British police reopen the case now. They want to find out what happened with her. Madeleine ‘s parents wanted a review for years. In Portugal the public opinion is that the McCann’s killed her own daughter and get rid of the corpse. There was no evidence. A detective who led the first months of the case is now writing a book about his view of the case that Madeleine died in the apartment. The McCann’s are now suing the detective. This hardens the public opinion in Portugal about the McCann’s. Therefor the situation of the British police is very difficult. It makes their work complicated.

I think it will be a difficult job for the British police to find the murders of Madeleine McCann. It is almost five years ago and it would be hard to get any evidence. It is a very complicated case and I can hardly believe that her own parents killed her. This is what the Portuguese think but if you see both parents it’s difficult to believe they are the murders of their own daughter. This all is a big tragedy and hopefully the British police will find out what happened with the girl but I think that this case would never been solved.

Axel, the dog

Axel is a dog. He is five years old and a Labrador. His boss, Richard Haughton, who is a thatcher, takes his dog everywhere he goes with him. That means: He is taken Axel up on the roof. Axel ‘s boss explained that they were working by a busy road and Axel was managed to climb up the ladder. While his boss is working Axel is sleeping on the rooftop. The dog doesn’t know how to get down so his boss has to carry him down the ladder. The costumers of Richard are all amazed. Many of them are taken their children with them to watch the dog. Axel has become a celebrity.

This story is a funny one. When I saw the picture of the dog on the rooftop I wanted to know what was going on. I was really amazed that his boss and the other partners of the company are willing to taken the dog downstairs every day a couple of times. It shows that they enjoy having the dog with them and they like the publicity. They have already 200-300 pictures taken of him and I think if everybody threatened his animal this way, we don’t need the Animal Liberation Front anymore.

Morosini death

In Italy all league games have been called off after  the death of Morosini. The midfielder was playing for Livorno in the serie B match in Pescara when he fell to the ground after half an hour. The medical staff did all they could. He was taken to hospital by ambulance, but he could not be revived. Morosini's teammates followed them to the hospital, but the doctor at the hospital said that nothing could be done. He died from a heart attack. Last month Bolton's Fabrice Muamba was technically "dead" for 78 minutes after collapsing in an FA Cup tie.The 24-year-old England player is now making "strong and steady improvements".He still has problems with his heart and it is possible he never would be able to play football anymore.


We heard often that a young professional football player suddenly collapse on pitch. A few years ago it happened by a football player off FC Utrecht , David di Tomasso. He died at the age of 26, leaving a wife and kid behind.  I think that being a professional football player is a hard job. Maybe it is to intensive for the body because so many young players have died of heart attacks. I think it is time to find out if we can do something about it. Maybe we have to chance the rules of the game, to make the game less intensive. 
Football is just a game and it is a shame that young talent full men are dying because it is so stressful.

A four-year-old girl with an IQ just one point below Albert Einstein and Stephan Hawking has been accepted into Mensa. When she was two years old she taught herself to read and was able to count till forty. Her name is Heidi Hawkins. According to the Mensa, the signs of an intelligent child are: an unusual memory, able to read at an early age, intolerance of other children and has an awareness of world events. A child with a high IQ is also asking questions all the time. The chief executive of the Mensa said that they aim to provide a positive environment for younger members to develop.

Opinion

It’s really amazing, a child who taught herself to read at the age of two. I only have one question:” how do they test a young child? “It is not possible to test them with a normal test for adults. The brains of a two years old child are still growing. Do they have special IQ test for children? The article doesn’t say anything about how they testing young children. My opinion is that it is not possible to know what the IQ is from a child. I would like to know from my class members how they think about testing a young child and if it is possible to create an  IQ test for young children.
