Paralyzed man

The article is about a called Tony Nicklinson. His age is 57 and seven years ago. paralyzed after a stroke. The only way to communicate is by blinking or through limited head movement. He doesn’t want to live anymore because as he said his life is dull, miserable and intolerable. Death is his only way out. His wife said that he was always the live and soul of the party .She said she has thought about ending his life herself but that was out of the question because that could take her to prison. The law is very clear about that in England. It is not allowed. Tony Niclison is now going to court to fight his right to die.

This is a very difficult situation. I can imagine that the life of Tony is horrible but  If we make a law about assisted suicide who is deciding that a life is not worth living. I think it’s very dangerous for the weakest among us like the sick, the old the disabled ones or the homeless. These are the people who are most in danger of having their lives judged as being ‘not worth living’. On the other hand, Tony is an intelligent man and he can make his own choice. If your life is so awfully who am I to say that he has to go on with his life?

  1. Hi Elvera,
There is a book about a French guy that was suffering from locked-in syndrome; the title is something with ...... butterfly, but I forgot. Iread it once and I thought it was unbelievable. The guy died just shortly before or after the book was published. He dictated the book by blinking his eye. Every letter had to be writtendown, Can you imagine how much courage that has cost him! If I find the book, you could borrow it if you like....
I think people in these circumstances should be able to decide whether or not they want to end their life. but who am I to say so?
    best regards,
    Inge

  2. I am sorry for Tony, but is a difficult question and it will always be a point for dicussion. I agree that it is dangerous when people judge about other people's lives, if it is worth living. I also think that there is a difference with people like Tony, who is terribly ill and someone who is depressive because this can change, there will always be a better day.
